    The Road to Diagnosis

What have we learned in the last year: I feel like we have been given a crash course in Autism 101. Luckily, Brent and I have been very fortunate to have found a fantastic diagnostic clinic right here in Mobile Alabama. It is the University of South Alabama Developmental Diagnostic Center. With it has come great doctors and staff. Ready to answer an questions you might have. In order to get an appointment you will need to have a referral sent to them from your pediatrician. The diagnostic process feels like a very long tedious journey. It all starts with another evaluation ( if you are just now starting this…

    Early Intervention Services

One of the first terms I heard and researched, on this roller coaster ride, was EARLY INTERVENTION or EI! Every where you look you will read about how important early intervention is for your child with special needs. Ok great…. But what is it? What happens? How do you get started? In our case, early intervention started the moment I called the State of Alabama to have someone come out an evaluate Sean for developmental delays. Mind you I knew Sean was delayed but I did not think it was that excessive. (100% denial on my part) Fortunately, for our family, someone called me back the next day. (It can…

    Stimming and meltdowns…..

Yesterday and today have been rough in our house. Sean’s stemming has been the worst its been in a long time this entire week. Typically, he rarely stems while at his Mimi’s house, but even she said he was almost panic like. I try not to look at Sean’s behaviors as being Autism related all the time because I want to treat him as normally as possible. However, this week, his normal stemming was followed up but some other not so frequent behaviors for him. 1. Throwing his head back and forth 2. Clawing 3. Kicking 4. Refusing to eat 5. Crying and screaming for long periods of time 6.…

    Time to Run Again

Hello, Hello everyone! I have a question for all of you our there… What is it that brings you sanity, happiness, or joy even?! You know that thing that makes you feel like you again after you have cooked and cleaned and worked all day for your family.  For me that “thing” is RUNNING. It helps clear my mind and get my thoughts together. Its normally the only time i have about 30 minutes to myself! Running is my time to decompress and get away for a minute. As moms (and dads) I think it is very important for us to make time for ourselves. Maybe not everyday but once…

    Sean’s Early signs…

( I would like to start this out by saying these are strictly behaviors we noticed in our son. In the research I have done a lot of his behaviors seem to be the same in others diagnosed with Autism. BUT every autistic child/person is in fact different. They may show all the classic signs of Autism where others will only show a few of them.) Autism… What is the first thing you think of when your hear this word? For me personally, it was confusion. I knew nothing about it because I had never experienced it one on one. I distinctly remember hearing it in my work office one…
